  5. This is UpdateMaker 1.3.1, a maintenance release of UpdateMaker.

  7. UpdateMaker is a utility program for making and applying update documents,
  8. or for making custom update applications.
  9.  
  10. An update document or application describes the differences between any two 
  11. Macintosh files and the changes required to convert one file into the other.
  12.  
  13. It is often advantageous to distribute update documents rather than a
  14. completely new version of a file, not only because the update document
  15. tends to be much smaller, but also because it is useless unless the old 
  16. original file is available.

  18. Stand-alone update applications are some 13K larger than the equivalent
  19. document but have the advantage that the receiver does not need to have a copy
  20. of UpdateMaker to use them.
  21.  
  22. UpdateMaker can create an update document for literally any two Macintosh 
  23. files, be they applications, documents, system extensions, or whatever.
  24. For example, one can make an update document that will describe the differences
  25. between the Font/DA Mover application and Disk First Aid, and change one
  26. into the other.

  28. Documentation on how to use UpdateMaker is built into the Help menu of the
  29. application.

  31. UpdateMaker requires System 6 or later; it is fully System-7 compatible and
  32. slightly System-7 friendly. It was written with MacApp The Wonder Development
  33. System, which is the main reason for its size.

  35. UpdateMaker is copyright 1993 Analog Digital Instruments Ltd and is made
  36. available to you by the Shareware principle: try it out and if you find
  37. it useful enough to keep and use it, we ask for a shareware payment 
  38. (address details are in the Help documentation). For non-commercial use, we
  39. ask for a $10 shareware payment, for commercial use we ask for $50.  Large
  40. companies or institutions should contact us about site licensing.

  42. The author would be grateful for any bug reports or constructive suggestions
  43. not requiring the entire application to be rewritten :-).

  45. Changes from version 1.3 are:
  46.  - it builds updates somewhat faster
  47.  - it no longer underestimates the amount of free space on hard disks
  48.  - it no longer dies on very large builds where many resources are involved
  49.  - it correctly updates data forks when the final file is in another directory
  50.  - the help can now be copied to the clipboard
  51.  - the Save Description menu item works
  52.  - it includes up-to-date information on UpdateMaker 2.0.
